Travel and Lifestyle: High Tea at Ladurée and What is a Perfect Macaron?

If you haven’t personally been to Ladurée, I have no doubt that you know what it is and what it is that they specialise in, courtesy of the good old Gossip Girl days… and for those who still have no clue then here’s a little background for you:

Ladurée is a luxury French bakery and pastries house, they are world famous for their macarons and have 52 stores in the world, 6 being in Paris alone and of course we don’t have one in SA. 😉 Little fun fact for you: Ladurée made macarons for the film Marie Antoinette! Amazing! 🙂

So where did I have the Ladurée experience, you might ask, I had high tea in Times Square in Hong Kong. Personally, I’m a huge fan of macarons and I don’t particularly have a sweet tooth. The perfect macarons for me is where the macaron shells have feet, not hollow and the outside is slightly hard but not crispy and baked to perfection but the inside of the macaron shell should be so airy that it melts in your mouth. Of course, a macaron is not a macaron without filling, although I’m a huge fan of chocolate ganache but a little bit of blueberry or lemon curd filling never hurt. The filling must be smooth and in fact where all the flavour is because the macaron shells don’t actual have any flavouring, just colouring. Although still attempting to bake the perfect macarons myself, I definitely know how to enjoy a good macaron! Unfortunately we don’t have a Ladurée store in SA but you can get pretty good macarons from Tashas Le Parc in Hyde Park Corner, they have a variety of different flavours and certainly worth a try if you’re seeking good macarons.

We also ordered lemon cake and also some sort of chocolate brownie, if I remembered correctly.

I cannot for the life of me remember the flavours I ordered but the pink one is definitely “Rose” because I always order that flavour and it was delicious! 🙂

Hope you enjoyed this post and thank you for reading! 🙂

LoveMaryLu Best of 2013

Hi everyone! Compliments to the new year and hope that everyone had a relaxing break and ready to take on 2014 with me. 🙂 I must apologise for a disappearing act before my holiday which was much anticipated because the plan was to blog while I was away and being in the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong and Taiwan for 2 weeks. Unfortunately my plan didn’t quite work out as firstly I left my laptop at home and secondly it was a real struggle to try get photos off the camera onto a platform where I could blog. But no need to worry, you’re not going to miss out on anything because I’ll definitely fill you in with posts from my holiday. 🙂

Getting right into this much delayed “Best of 2013” post, it’s been a hell of a year I must admit. Possibly the longest year I’ve lived (well it certainly felt like it), there was much to be learnt and every corner was a new adventure and a new struggle. As many of you may remember, I went to Thailand in July 2013 for the first time and had an amazing time! 2013 was definitely a year of many firsts, including my first job in the professional world. I’ve met some incredible people and also some… let’s just say interesting people whom I had to deal with over the past year. Although hard at times but I have absolutely no regrets and would gladly relive my 2013 but from a better perspective knowing that I will see light at the end of the tunnel. I truly believe that 2014 will be an incredible year also full of many “firsts” because life is just too short to not be adventurous, I’m only in my twenties for 10 years, which is far too short for my liking!

I must also thank all my readers, whether you’ve been following my blog right from the beginning or have stumbled across it for the first time, I must thank all of you for supporting me throughout and watching me grow as a blogger as well as a person. My adventures are your adventures and my dreams are your dreams! Many ask me why I keep up with a blog because it’s so tiring, to be honest I don’t know. I don’t care about the freebies or the “perks” people blog for because that shouldn’t be a reason any blogging is blogging for. I just enjoy writing and to be honest, my life is way too adventurous (so I like to think anyway) to be kept to myself. I believe that 2014 is going to be a great year of traveling to new places for me so if you enjoy that aspect of life, watch this space! 🙂

Here’s to the best of 2013…

LoveMaryLu Xmas Wishlist 2013

Happy Monday everyone! I was supposed to have posted this on Friday but the breaking news of our former president Nelson Mandela passing left the Nation somber and I thought that it was vastly inappropriate for me to post anything as a sign of respect for the Father of Democracy and our Nation (South Africa).

As much as X’mas is about family and food it’s almost about presents!! 😀 I thought about doing a X’mas wishlist for some time now but I wasn’t quite sure what I would put on the list, things I would want for Xmas or just gift ideas in general. I decided on BOTH and also just some luxury items to lust over. If you’re looking for ideas to buy for a loved one, I’m not saying you have to buy the brands I post about but the actual item itself is what counts 😉 These are in no particular order of preference… and a chance to get to know and enjoy the finer things in life because a little luxury never hurt anyone 😉

1. Tiffany & Co. – The Atlas Collection

I’ve always remembered as a little girl that I would obsess over the Tiffany & Co. Return to Tiffany Collection with the heart shaped tag that has the famous engraving. I would spend literally hours browsing the internet drawing up a mental list and hoping that one day I will be able to purchase them all (greedy bugger wasn’t I?). I’ve always lived that dream where my engagement ring would be held in that Tiffany blue box because real engagement rings come in a blue box 😉 My first Tiffany & Co. item was an anniversary gift from E. 🙂 I figured I’d share with you my love for The Atlas Collection, which involves the timeless class of Roman Numerals in the designs of each and every piece. The collection is for the classy and fabulous, a real treasure to have.

2. Christian Louboutin – Decollete 554 100mm

The shoes with the red soles. Can we just have a moment of silence to admire the incredible craftsmanship of a pair of Christian Louboutins. I’ve always said to myself that I refuse to wear any other red soles beside the original Louboutins. Unfortunately, the red colour does wear out the more you wear them but the feeling of having a pair of Loubis on your feet is totally worth every single penny. My favourite, call me boring, is the Decollete 554 100mm heel in black patent, which is pretty much the “original” Loubis everyone see on pictures etc. A girl can never have too many pairs of shoes… truly.

3. Cartier – Tank Solo Timepiece

I’m sure you can pick up by now that I’m not fashion fad and I don’t try catch onto the latest trends, I’m a classic and timeless kinda girl. I like pieces that I can wear on a daily basis and that will match everything and anything. I can’t think of one outfit that you won’t be able to match with this beautiful classic piece, whether you’re rocking the little black dress or shorts and t-shirt, this baby will keep you company in anything. 😉 Watches have been a real weakness of mine, unique and classic watches and especially ones that not every other person owns. I think a watch can really tell a lot about a person and especially because I’m not particularly girlie all the time, this timepiece is definitely an all-round must have for me.

4. Pandora – Charm bracelet

At least, something rather common! 🙂 If you have been following my blog for some time, you’ll know that I started a Pandora bracelet and the reason why I say “started” is because the charms require collecting, so you have to start from somewhere. I don’t have many charms although the more I browse Tiffany & Co. and Cartier online, the more I’m over my Pandora bracelet 🙁 . I’ve noticed that the Pandora items here in SA are relatively more expensive than overseas so I think I’ll just wait for my upcoming trip to Hong Kong and Taiwan before I decide on more charms. I think these make great Xmas presents though because you can customise them and they have all sorts of cute little charms. If your loved one isn’t particularly into silver, there are also leather bracelets.

5. Apple – iPhone 5S in Rose gold

I’m not going to lie, I am obsessed with Apple products, laptop, iMac, iPods, iPhone, iPad , I pretty much have it all! I just think they’re so convenient to use plus it just makes sense to have them all Apple because they sync so well with each other. I also love the simple, sleek design. What’s there not to love?

N41181_PM2_Front view_Louis Vuitton Speedy Bandouliere 25 Damier Ebene

6. Louis Vuitton – Speedy Bandouliere 25 in Damier Ebene canvas

Nothing shouts “timeless” louder than a speedy. It’s the classic Louis Vuitton that many girls received as the first LV bag, the Speedy 30 is definitely my first LV bag and I still love it. In a previous post I mentioned that I wanted the “new” speedy, I meant the Speedy Bandouliere as it has a different zip and a long shoulder strap that’s removable. I’ve realised that all my LV items are in the Monogram canvas and I think it’s time to change things up a little with the Damier. The Speedy 30 is a little too big to be worn as a sling bag so I think the 25 would be best for my needs! I’m in love…

7. Mac cosmetics – Riri heart Mac Holiday Collection 2013

A Xmas wish list is just not complete without a little indulgence from the Mac holiday collection. Another reason I love Xmas is because Mac always comes up with the most original and beautiful limited edition items. Not just singular items but often in a set with a variety of products and colours and often extremely affordable. For those MAC lovers out there, this collection will be available online on 10 December 2013 and available only at free standing stores on 9 January 2014. If you haven’t checked out the Mac online store, you are definitely in for a treat because shopping for Mac products has never been easier. No more queues and having to drag yourself to a busy shopping mall just to top up on your favourite products! Check out Brace yourselves and be ready to “fight” for this collection because not only this collection marks the return of the famous RiRi Woo lipstick but it also introduces 2 new colours, namely the Pleasure Bomb and Bad Girl RiRi.

8. Cartier – LOVE Bracelet

I know I’ve mentioned Cartier already but it is the concept of this special piece that is most romantic. This bracelet is apparently the “universal symbol of love and commitment” and the concept and delicate design is definitely something for us to oooohhh and aaaahhh over. The idea is that you receive it as a gift from your beloved (obviously!) and the only way to remove the bracelet is with the special screwdriver, which is for your partner to keep. This bracelet comes in yellow gold, rose gold and white gold. Back in the 1970’s when the bracelet was first introduced by Cartier, it was gold plated and as the years passed, the whole bracelet is now solid gold and they have even introduced the collection with diamond studs, although I think that’s a bit excessive. So, how far would you go for love? 🙂

Hope you enjoyed this post and thank you so much for reading!

With love…xxx
